“An attempt at exhausting a place in Paris”
SS-16 | km 223-391 is a story, told in pictures, about a particular section of the state highway nr. 16 (the so-called ‘Adriatica’). Its aim is to allow us to perceive, through the pictures, the situation and the transformation of places and areas surrounding this state highway, which is the longest one in Italy, since it runs for over 1000 kilometres through six italian regions, from Padua to Otranto, connecting the main cities of the Adriatic coast. In the Marche region, the highway runs for nearly 170 kilometres, from the km 223 to the km 391.
Thirty years after Luigi Ghirri’s ‘Viaggio in Italia’, I decided to develop this project in order to pay homage to that awful work of art and to its strong visual sensivity.
In SS-16 | km 223-391 I have tried to mantain a ‘no-reportage’ attitude, leaving the reality to show itself ‘as it is’, without any will of explanation, staying far away from any kind of accentuated aesthetism, making much of anything, and looking with curiosity at simple things (a pole in the middle of a field, a forsaken little bottle, an old car, a gas station, a strange building, a placard, a road sign).
During this trip along the ‘Adriatica’ highway I searched for questions, not for answers… I wish that the observers of my pictures will be able to find their answers, and maybe also their questions.

“Tentativo di esaurimento di un luogo parigino”
SS 16 | km 223-391 è un racconto per immagini attraverso il tratto marchigiano della strada statale 16 Adriatica con lo scopo di percepire la situazione dei luoghi e i fenomeni di trasformazione presenti sul territorio. Questa strada collega i maggiori capoluoghi della costa adriatica, la sua estensione, che supera i 1000 km, la rende la più lunga strada statale della rete italiana. L’itinerario interessa sei regioni. Ha inizio nel centro di Padova e arriva fino ad Otranto. La tratta ricadente nella regione Marche ha un’estensione totale di quasi 170 km, più precisamente, dal km 223 al Km 391.
A trent’anni da Viaggio in Italia, questa mia ricerca, senza nessuna pretesa, vuole essere un omaggio a quel lavoro che costituì un progetto di grande sensibilità visiva. In essa ho voluto comunicare quello che avevo visto, cercando di mantenere uno sguardo imparziale, rispettoso, in chiave anti reportagistica, sospendendo ogni tipo di giudizio e rifiutando estetismi esasperati, senza ritenere nulla come insignificante (dal palo della luce in mezzo ad un campo, alla bottiglietta abbandonata su di un vecchio bancone nel ciglio della strada).
